MAARTEN VAN DER VLEUTEN
|
|
Biography
|
|
Maarten van der Vleuten
started releasing his music in 1986 on cassettes as The
Noise Architect. (only available as limited editions) Then in 1989
he got airplay on national radio (VPRO) with a series of political songs
about the Berlin Wall, Saddam Hoessein, Salmon Rushdie and the Gulf
War.

|
1991
|
|
In the summer of 1991
he released his first 12" on DJAX RECORDS, called MAJOR MALFUNCTION.
( a co-operation with D.J. Marius Kuilenberg). After that he released
48 V. PHANTOM POWER on R&S RECORDS. (one track together with Frank
de Wulf). In october that year the second Major malfunction was a fact.
(also with D.J. Marius Kuilenberg). In november SEE SAW released their
first 12" called The starwood party E.P. This was a project of
The dutch Department of Techno. Maarten wrote the original track, called
the Major Malfunction Mix and it was remixed by Speedy J, Human Beings,
Terrace and more. In the same month R&S started a new sublabel called
TZ. Maarten was responsible for the the numbers TZ 2 and TZ 7. TZ 7
contained three tracks of which two were written together with David
Morley. In december he made a remix of Dominator, to be found on R&S,
called The Re-Remixes.
|
|
1992
|
|
1992; a FLUX remix of
Robogroove was released on Prime Records in february. (The original
track was made by Trance Induction.) In march 1992 he produced the experimental
Glue Sniffing Gerald E.P. , and one month later he produced the 12"
Cliche Tracks, both on DJAX. (also to be found on this e.p. was a remix
of D.J. Aardvarck).
|
|
We are now in april.
Maarten had worked like a madman and recorded so many tracks that he
and R&S decided to start a sublabel. OUTRAGE RECORDINGS was born
and three twelve inches were released. These were ZIMT, INTEGRITY and
FLUX. In july another three e.p.'s came out; PULTEC, ZIMT I and INTEGRITY
II. The last one containing four tracks of which two were written together
with D.J. Aardvarck. In the meanwhile he made remixes for See Saw of
Hole in One, Toxit, Transform, Ralphie Dee & Dino Blade and C.3.P.O.
A weekend in the R&S studio's with David Morley and R&S boss
Renaat resulted in in a limited edition 12", simply called Black
Label. At this time See Saw showed interest in a remix 12" of the
48 V. Phantom Power track Feel D-Base. The idea was to re-release the
original track, which contained vocals, and to make remixes in different
styles. This resulted in Flashback, with vocals by Sandy Kandou. This
was last project Maarten ever did for See Saw, because of the unreliability
of Hans Hermans. At the end of november the second 48 V. Phantom Power
was released and shortly after that, in december, the third ZIMT.

1993
|
|
1993. In the previous
year Maarten had worked on an ambient album called Moonwater by IN-EXISTENCE.
It was released in february on APOLLO RECORDS. In the same month 'The
second groove 2 the same nation' by D.J. Aardvarck was released on DJAX
and Maarten appeared on it as Party Marty as the man who trained the
animals....... Later on that year a new Flux track was licenced to E.S.P.
for their third compilation CD.
|
|
At this point R&S
stopped releasing Maarten's music, and because of the exclusive contract
with them it was impossible for him to release new material on other
labels.
|
|
In this period he did
a remix of his Major Malfunction classic 'House-shield' for the Surreal
Sound tape and a remix for Trance Induction for his album Electrickery.
After the contract with R&S ended Maarten was fed up with the house
scene and he started to rediscover his roots. This resulted in a series
of experimental and classical songs. (the experimental songs were released
later on, on the In-Existence album Private Rituals)

|
1995
/ 1996
|
|
Encouraged by Trance
Induction Maarten remixed his dance track 'E.T. welcome song'. From
here a new period started with a 12" on BETON, a remix for DIRECT
DRIVE and a new FLUX 12" on KLANG ELEKTRONIK. Halley Records selected
a variety of tracks of the previous year for a series of compilation
CD's. DJAX showed interest in his new MAJOR MALFUNCTION, MEKANIK in
a new FLUX and PARAPHRASE in his CRYPTIC project. Together with Trance
Induction he recorded the 'Lunetten' E.P. for U-TRAX. On XS RECORDS
he released FRANTIC. For AQUARHYTHMS he and D.J. JOOST did the Hydr(o)remix
for their 'Greetings from deepest America' compilation CD.

July 1996. 1997 |
|
SIGNUM Six was a FLUX
again (ZAH ATH) with on side a two tracks with dreamy strings, double
bassdrums, totally cut up and edited and treated in a very peculiar
way with vocals. The b side one jungle track with beautiful sounds and
melodies and vocals. And secondly an 'artificial breakbeat electro-hop'
track with vocals by Maarten himself.
|
|
1998
|
|
Finally, in january,
the release of his second IN-EXISTENCE album 'PRIVATE
RITUALS' on Signum. This project was written and recorded over a
period of more than three years. Maarten invited several guest
musicians to play on this album. Featuring: EDWIN PAANAKKER on guitar
and fretless bass (ex-BLUE STAR), ED PERSIJN on guitar (LOST IN MISERY),
FRANS FRIEDERICH on trumpet (DULL SCHICKSAL, ESTOS) and also the CHOIR
JEROEN BOSCH (over 70 people) sung their part on the CD.
|
|
In the summer FLUX -
BLOEMENDAEL EFFECT was released on SIGNUM.
|
|
1999
|
|
SIGNUM started with
a sublabel called PASSIFLORA.
The first release before the summer and the second one in october. Both
produced by Maarten as V48. In september he did the acid/techno project
E144 on ZODIAK COMMUNE. One track was written together with D.J. Q=E.
|
|
2000
|
|
In february the third
V48 was launched (one track of it is to be found on Steve Lawler's Dark
Drums) and in the summer the fourth V48. (both on Passiflora Records)
|
|
2001
|
|
In January Maarten started
a new label called GLAM
RECORDS for his progressive/trance/techno productions. The first
release was simply called "Vandervleuten - The Masterplan Remixes".
At the end of that year, in november, the second Vandervleuten (Variations
on a 'love me' theme) as well as the fifth V48 on Passiflora came out.

2002
|
|
july 2002
|
|
After a turbulent period
in his private life Maarten was forced to put his own labels on a hold
and picked up his deejay-ing again. (something he had not done since
1984) He also started to collect music and on the way of looking for
new and old -forgotten- music, became a real digger. His main interest,
producing music, was now reduced to a very small portion of his activities.
(consequently with no releases)
|
|
2003
|
|
Together with his best
friends (Jay Cee Corp! and Mr. Blomski) he joined the DJ collective;
Club Cliche.
(initiated by Jay Cee Corp!)
A DJ collective that was made up about several (record-) collectors with different area's of musical interest) They started deejay-ing around local clubs, at special events and for friends. Maarten adopted the DJ name Tokyo Joe. (able to cover the musical era from the 50's till now) |
|
2004
|
|
While digging for lost
musical treasures, Maarten got in contact with ToneFloat
Records.
|
|
Funny
enough they were selling a new wave record from Mekanik Kommando that
Maarten was looking for, for over 20 years. After some email contact
Maarten was asked by ToneFloat to do a dance remix of a track done by
The Use Of Ashes, a band formed by one of the members of the former
Mekanik Kommando. This resulted in a very limited 12" with 2 re-mixes,
one is kind of progressive trance and the other one an electro-mix.
Maarten's first production in over two years...
|
|
2005
|
|
ToneFloat hears more
music from Maarten's past and also his latest productions. They now
decide to use some of Maarten's work for his new label "C Records".
(a division of ToneFloat) This results in the ambient album "Vow
Of Silence" by In-Existence.
|
|
2006
|
|
In may Maarten picked
up where he left in 2002 and the new In-Existence album (...Of Truth
Eternal Beauty And Nought...) was released on his label Signum. This
was followed shortly by his 12" Kremahitz that he released on the
UK based label Mighty Robot Recordings. Also appearing on this EP where
DJ Aardvarck and Rude 66. In the meantime the whole Signum catalogue
as well as some older releases where signed to eMusic, iTunes and Dance-Tunes,
to have them available for download. On eMusic the exclusive label sampler
Signs From The South was released in june.
|
|
In february artist Karin van Pinxteren asked Maarten to write the exclusive music for her installation "Kurt's Zimmer". This resulted in the "Kurt's Zimmer Walz" and is part of the installation. Inspired by the work of artist Frank Havermans, Maarten wrote "De Verkenningen Part 1 - 4". During the opening exhibition Out Of Context in october at the CBK in Den Bosch, The Netherlands, the music was presented for the first time. (and played during the whole lenght of the exhibition). The music was then released in november on the the album; In-Existence - De Verkenningen. (Signum, signcd068) The album came in a metal box limited to 100 copies only. |
|
2007
|
|
Early 2007 Maarten picked up his idea again of writing music to poetry. The first tracks he finished where inspired by the poetry of Ignace Schretlen. His book "Een Onvermoede Bocht" was published in february, and the plans where that an album with music for Signum Recordings should follow shortly. Maarten wrote 15 musical impressions inspired by the book. The release was planned for the summer of that year but due to all kinds of circumstances delayed until early 2008. In the meantime author Ignace Schretlen recorded the spoken word of his poetry for the album. More info can be found here. In may, Maarten was asked again by Karin van Pinxteren for a musical production. This time it was for her installation "Waltz With Me". Maarten wrote the soundscape that premiered at Zaal 2 deWillem3 Vlissingen, The Netherlands. In july Maarten was asked by Eat Concrete to contribute a track for their compilation album New Deal (EAT006, 2 x lp). The track Reptv was chosen, a mix of stomping techno and acid with deep spacious layers. In august, two new, mp3-only, albums where released on Signum; swank.inc. - .separated by Maurits Jonkergouw and Unreleased Work 91-95 by Maarten himself. November's highlight was the use of Maarten's track De Vierde Verkenning (taken from the In-Existence album De Verkenningen) that accompanied a movie played inside Frank Havermans installation KAPKAR / TT-C2P. The installation premiered at Sao Paolo, at the Seventh Sao Paulo Biennale of Architecture in Brazil and will travel around the world for the next 2 years, On december 2007, Karin van Pinxteren's book "Kurt's Zimmer publikation" was published. It was presented for the first time at the Venlo based museum "van Bommel van Dam". The book contained a CDs with 2 tracks by Maarten. One being the original version of the Kurt's Zimmer Walz that was written for the installation Kurt's Zimmer, and the second track being an exclusive remake of it. In 2008 the album High Intolerance Towards Low Energies was released on Tonefloat Records. It was the first full length album Maarten released using his common name. Also a digital release was done with unreleased material and it can be found on iTunes. (Flux-De-Luxe) |
|
In 2006 Maarten had started the initial recordings for Een Onvermoede Bocht, but due to moving and rebuilding his studio, he was forced to halt the project. In 2008 he had finally finished the album. We are now in 2009, january, and the album Een Onvermoede Bocht was released on january 28. In the UK a 2 x cd plus digital bonus recordings was released in the end of january. Maarten contributed with 4 tracks to this ambient project. |
