here's some sort of floor plan of the intention

red - studio area

yellow - office

pink - window

blue - wall

because the sound-isolation is quite thick it will reduce the inner space dramatically

there are two options now

1-lifting the ceiling

2-lowering the concrete floor

more info on that in the following days...

DECEMBER 8

the large red thing is actually a rail track, estimated at 180 kg

on the left picture you can see where it originally was located

on the right picture you can see Loek and me carrying it outside after we removed it

-

the second wall on the inside is closed now (white bricks)

-

for good luck a miniature buddah was sealed in the wall
the original chimney and what is left of it now
DECEMBER 14

The chimney/fireplace is almost removed now, sorry no pics yet...

A lot of rubble was removed today and also the place was cleaned up a bit (just a little bit...)

In the coming days the ceiling will be reinforced and some pipelines will be dug in.

The pipelines are for the cables. (internet, doorbel, phone etc...)

***update***

-

Now it's getting serious.

On januari 8th a contractor will demolish the original floor and in a period of 2 weeks a new one will be made.

The new floor will be 40 cm lower than the old one.

The extra space that is gained was neccesary to make the inside of the soundproof cage more comfortable.

They're also gonna place the large window in the front of the studio.

It is special soundproof glass of 27 mm thick.

In the meanwhile me, my father and my father-in-law will start with the ceiling.

I'm sorry I don't have a good translation for the material at the moment so i'm gonna use the dutch name for it.

(maybe later on I will correct that)

THE CEILING

-below the layers in order of appearance from top to bottom-

To the existing (wooden) ceiling, particle board (18 mm) will be glued.

The edges and openings are then closed with "elastic kit"

Then there will be an empty space of 2 cm.

Then approx 15 cm of Rockwool and below that, attached to rubber "tiles", approx 2 cm of gipsum board.

This should keep us busy during the coming holidays.....

the rubber "tile"

These tiles are used for kids playgrounds and will be cut up in small squares.

DECEMBER 21

The floor is now dug out approx 60 cm.

First, a double layer of polystyrene (tempex/piepschuim) is put on the bottom.

- - -

Then an iron "raster", for the reinforced concrete, is placed on top of the polystyrene.

(tiles are keeping it all in place)

- - -
Bring on the concrete !

...et voila !

at the edges a special kind of plastic is placed to create a buffer between the new floor and the original walls.

this prevents the floor to resonate directly onto the walls.

(kind of like a "floating" floor)

On the floor the soundproof "cage" will be build, so any sound that comes from the cage is prevented to leak directly to the outside walls.

so far so good...

DECEMBER 27 - 28

the ceiling was reinforced by Loek.

- -

below the pictures of JayCeeCorp! and Mr. Blomski inspecting the "studio"

they are gonna help me out in the coming weeks

(you can see the enthusiasm on their faces...)

- -

the planning of the construction of the soundproof cage

their best advice was "...to buy good headphones and forget the whole thing..."

okay, so far for the preparations.

on january 8 the garage-door will be removed and a window (27 mm of special soundproof glass) will be placed.

more on that next week.

FEBRUARY 02

finally the outside window is placed

first the old garage-door was removed

then some serious business

- -

view from the attic (that's where my girlfriends studio is, she's an illustrator)

- - - -

and afterwards

finishing up the inside fundament

- -

the window from the inside

-

me getting adjusted to the new environment (the difference in height is because of the lowered floor)

-

february 5

the glass is placed in the window

it consists of double layered insulating glass and a layer of toughened glas (with air space inbetween)

- -

- - - -

the final work on the windows is done

that also means that the outside is finished and i can start on the inside with the "floating chamber"

read all about that in part 2
